HEARTBEATS classes are continuing the tradition of  Australian Heart Foundation Heartmoves class.
The Heartbeats classes are EXACTLY THE SAME CLASS with the same aims but just with a new name.

HEARTBEATS are an innovative exercise program, suitable for all people wishing to exercise at low to moderate intensity, and are specifically designed to be safe and appropriate for clients with stable chronic conditions or at risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis etc. this includes those who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, those who are sedentary or who are overweight or obese.

Tthese classes are also suitable for anyone who is not currently exercising, or who woud like to add a little “Extra” into their current exercise program.

Each Heartbeats class is delivered by Cathy who is Australian Heart Foundation Heartmoves accredited and licensed exercise leader, and conforms to work within safety guidelines.

Activities in each class aim to improve strength, balance, mobility, memory, stability and general fitness.

The classes are social and everyone attanding is encouraged to chat, laugh and have fun while improving their health.

REAL PEOPLE FEELING REALLY GOOD!

As of September 2019 there have been 13408 participants during the 8 years that Heartbeats have been running on Bribie Island. Some of the participants have now reached over 600 classes!

I LOVE conducting Heartbeats classes and have been taking these classes for over 8 years now.
Why? Because they are fun, social and most of all, because I see improvements in the fitness of the participants in every single class. Sometimes the changes are subtle and other times they are huge. I see them as I take the class and I smile like a Cheshire cat knowing that these participants are doing something that was not possible just a few short weeks ago.

Participants can do the whole calss seated, or you can sit down at any stage to rest if you need to.

We use resistance bands for strength exercises and these can be increased as your strength improves.

All balance and stability exercises are done with a chair next to you for safety and everyone is encouraged to work at a leveol that is suitable for them.

So what do the participants think about the classes….. Ask Ross….

Three afternoons each week, a group of exercise devotees assemble at the Activity Hall for an hour of fun and fitness. Usually numbering between twelve and twenty, we follow the lead of Cathy, our guide and guru. She is an expert in her field, and always stresses that we should not overdo it. The exercises are aimed at our fitness levels, and are constantly punctuated by smart comments and mirthful intrusions. Dignity and decorum are not obligatory. I spent most of last year in hospital or home nursing and could only get about with a walking frame. After two months with Cathy, and the encouragement of the group, I have even discarded my walking stick. The targeted exercises, and the discipline of “sticking to it”, are the reasons for this progress. I totally recommend the classes to all, and wonder why so few males participate. Don’t be shy gentlemen. Come along and enjoy the benefits – Ross Wyatt

what They’re Saying

Client Testimonials

Since starting the Heartmoves exercise programme with Cathy, I have found I have more flexibility in my arm in which I have lymphedema. My balance and coordination has improved (I’ve even able to juggle a bit more and getting better all the time). I’m walking much easier and only use my wheelie walker for distance walks now. We may look a bit strange doing some of the exercises but they all help and what’s more, it’s great fun.

Several residents of Island Breeze Resort for Over 50’s at Bongaree participate in the ‘Heartmoves’ programme twice weekly under the guidance and direction of fitness trainer Cathy McGillivray. Each session of one hour duration is non stop physical movement and is designed to keep most parts for the body moving without undue stress and if necessary at your own comfort and pace. The only reprieve during the hour is a quick drink of water but the many innovations must surely help prevent the “rusting up” of the body’s moving parts.
I have two artificial knees which give me good flexibility in the legs but my shoulders grind and groan and give some restriction, hence the need for ‘Heartmoves”. Cathy is an inspiration and makes an otherwise arduous task bearable and pleasant. It could only be improved with the participation of more people.

Len Sutherland - Island Breeze Resort

Just now I heaved myself up off the floor and realised it is getting easier to get up. The exercises have helped me tremendously.
I feel more supple and move a lot freer. I enjoy the challenge each time I go as combining hand, arm and leg movements sure exercises the brain too. I enjoy the comradery as we laugh at ourselves as we endeavour to do each move. I am getting to know more of the residents in our village and that’s great.
